A guide to getting from the airport to the city and traveling around Bosnia and Herzegovina. Find the easiest, fastest and cheapest ways to get around, with Gezpoint's expertise!
The heart of the Balkans, Bosnia and Herzegovina welcomes thousands of tourists every year with its historical and cultural riches, and is like an open-air museum. From the historic streets of Sarajevo to Mostar’s enchanting bridge, this beautiful country offers plenty to explore, and knowing the right ways to get around is the key to a comfortable holiday.
So, how should you use the transportation network in Bosnia and Herzegovina? What’s the easiest way to get to the city center after landing at Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ)? How can you explore without getting lost or straining your budget? As a Gezpoint travel expert, we’ve prepared the most practical transportation guide to make your trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina easier!
Sarajevo International Airport (Butmir) is about 10 kilometers from the city center. Getting to the center is quite easy, with several options to suit your budget.
The most economical way to get from the airport to Sarajevo city center (Baščaršija) is by taking the airport buses operated by Centrotrans. Route: Airport - Bentbaša (near Baščaršija). Fare: Approximately 5 KM (Convertible Mark) one way, or 8 KM for a round trip. Advantage: Affordable and goes directly to the tourist center.
If you have a lot of luggage or don’t want to wait, a taxi is the most convenient option. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when taking a taxi in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Taxis outside the airport sometimes charge tourists higher fares. So always make sure the meter is running. A taxi from the airport to Baščaršija should cost an average of 20 - 30 KM (approximately 10-15 Euros). Choosing a reliable taxi company (such as Sarajevo Taxi) will make your trip safer.
Car rental offices are available at the airport for travelers who value comfort. However, due to parking difficulties and narrow streets in the city, we recommend renting a car only if you plan to travel between cities. The most comfortable and stress-free option is undoubtedly the private transfer services and package tours offered by Gezpoint.

Getting around cities such as Sarajevo and Mostar is quite easy, and walking is also a great alternative.
Sarajevo has one of Europe’s first tram lines. Running across the city, these trams offer a nostalgic atmosphere and are very practical. Ticket: You can buy tickets at kiosks at the stops (approximately 1.60 KM) or pay the driver in cash (1.80 KM). Don’t forget to validate your ticket using the machines as soon as you board the tram! Key Route: Tram line 3 runs between Ilidža and Baščaršija and is the most popular route.
You can use trolleybus and bus routes to reach hilly areas not served by the tram line and other parts of the city. The ticket system is the same as for trams.
The historic centers of Sarajevo and Mostar are quite compact. It’s best to explore Baščaršija, the Latin Bridge, Sebilj and many other historic landmarks on foot. We highly recommend getting lost in the streets to experience the spirit of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

You can’t visit Bosnia and Herzegovina without seeing Mostar! Traveling between Sarajevo and Mostar is also quite easy and very enjoyable.
A Wonderful Train Journey: The Sarajevo - Mostar train route has been named one of the world’s most scenic train routes. You can take the morning train to travel alongside the Neretva River and canyons. A one-way ticket costs approximately 12 KM. Bus: You can also reach Mostar in approximately 2.5 hours by taking buses that depart every hour.
---
Currency: The Convertible Mark (KM or BAM) is used in the country. Although some places accept payment in Euros, carrying local currency will make it easier to use transport. Ticket Inspections: Tickets are checked frequently on public transport. Be sure to validate your ticket to avoid a fine. Taxi Safety: Avoid unlicensed taxis and choose licensed vehicles.
