Bus tours are packages where the journey is made entirely by tour bus. With no flight restrictions, they offer more flexible baggage allowances, stops in several cities along the way and generally lower prices. This page lists tours with “bus” in their name, covering the Balkans, Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia and domestic destinations.
On bus tours, passengers board the tour bus at designated departure points and travel on the same bus throughout the itinerary. Long stretches are usually driven overnight or broken up with stops. Departure times, boarding points and daily travel times are listed in the tour’s day-by-day itinerary and Transportation Information section.
Routes combining Plovdiv and Sofia in Bulgaria, Thessaloniki, Kavala and the northern Aegean coast in Greece, Ohrid in North Macedonia, and Balkan capitals are travelled by bus via Edirne. Batumi in Georgia is reached via the Black Sea coastal highway. In Türkiye, the Black Sea highlands, Southeastern Anatolia and Cappadocia are classic bus tour destinations.
On bus tours, luggage limits are more flexible than on flights, and there is no waiting time at the airport. Stops at small towns and scenic viewpoints along the route are possible. Since there is no airfare, the price is generally more affordable than the flight version of the same route; bus tours are especially popular with large families and groups.
Bulgaria and Greece are in the Schengen Area; holders of burgundy passports need a visa. North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Georgia are visa-free. Border crossing wait times may vary depending on how busy they are; your passport must be valid for at least six months from your return date.
For long journeys, a neck pillow, comfortable clothing, water, and light snacks make the trip easier. Seat numbers on buses may be assigned in booking order; if you have a specific seat preference, please mention it when booking.
Bus tours are suitable for those who prefer not to fly, large families, retirees, and travellers looking to keep their budget in check. Along the way, there are stops in border towns, at scenic viewpoints, and at rest areas; the guide provides information about the destinations during the journey. On long-distance routes, travel time is longer than on tours that include flights, so bus itineraries for the same route usually last one or two nights longer. The total travel time and stop locations are listed in the tour’s day-by-day itinerary. On tours that cross into the Balkans via Edirne and Kapıkule, waiting times at the border may be longer during public holidays and vacation periods; itineraries are planned to allow for this. For domestic routes, departure points are generally centrally located stops in major cities, and boarding may also be available in cities along the way.
The buses used on long-distance tours are generally tour coaches with air conditioning, reclining seats, and luggage compartments. The guide travels with the group throughout the journey. Rest stops and their durations are set in advance in the itinerary.
Departure points vary by tour; boarding locations and times are listed in the Transportation Information section of each tour.
The route is visa-free only if it passes through North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania; routes passing through Bulgaria or Greece require a Schengen visa.
