The best activities in North Macedonia, from the capital Skopje and Stone Bridge to Matka Canyon and Lake Ohrid.
North Macedonia is a wonderful Balkan country where language barriers are minimal (you can find many shopkeepers who speak Turkish) and the food is particularly suited to our tastes. Here are some things you should definitely do when you arrive:
In the capital, Skopje, walk across the historic Ottoman Stone Bridge over the Vardar River. On one side of the river is the historic Old Bazaar of Skopje (the Ottoman side); on the other is Macedonia Square, home to the enormous statue of Alexander the Great and countless modern sculptures. Experiencing how clearly the two cultures are separated is fascinating.
Just 15 kilometers from central Skopje, Matka Canyon is a stunning natural wonder, with emerald-green waters winding between steep cliffs. You can take a boat trip here or visit Vrelo Cave.
Macedonia is the birthplace of trileçe, the Balkans' famous dessert. Enjoying authentic trileçe with tea at one of the little shops in the historic bazaar or trying the famous Skopje meatballs is a must.
Ohrid, in the south of the country, is the heart of Macedonian tourism. Watching the sunset here, among its old wooden houses in the style of Safranbolu, lakeside churches (especially St. John at Kaneo), and pearl shops, will melt away all your fatigue.
