A guide to historic churches to visit on North Macedonia’s Lake Ohrid, shopping for Ohrid pearls, and taking boat trips.
Known as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans," Ohrid is North Macedonia's most beautiful city, with 365 churches, a crystal-clear lake, and historic Ottoman houses.
Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the lake, this historic church is the star of every photo of Ohrid. Visiting at sunset to take in the magnificent view will be one of the most unforgettable moments of your trip to Ohrid.
Make your way through the classic whitewashed Ottoman houses with their bay windows to Tsar Samuel's Fortress at the city's highest point. After admiring the endless lake views from the fortress, head back down and stroll through the Old Bazaar.
Ohrid's most famous souvenir, the Ohrid Pearl is made using a special formula from the scales of the 'Pashitka' fish, which is found only in this lake. A genuine Ohrid pearl is unaffected by fire and does not tarnish.
A short distance from the city center, St. Naum is famous for its icy waters, which form the source of the lake. You can feed the peacocks in the monastery gardens and take a peaceful ride in a small boat over the springs.
