Places to visit in Belgrade, Serbia’s capital: Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova Street, the Tesla Museum, and nightlife.
Located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, Serbia's capital, Belgrade (the White City), is a shining star of visa-free Balkan travel, with vast parks, modern streets and a legendary nightlife.
Belgrade's largest and most beautiful green space, Kalemegdan (Belgrade Fortress), is the city's historic heart. Take a walk along the fortress walls in the park and enjoy a magnificent sunset where the Sava and Danube rivers meet. (The Victor Monument is also here.)
The city's most prestigious pedestrian shopping and walking street, Knez Mihailova is Belgrade's answer to Istanbul's İstiklal Avenue, with elegant shops, street performers and cafés.
Dedicated to Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-born inventor and father of modern electricity, this museum lets you explore Tesla's personal belongings and inventions. During guided demonstrations, you can experience wireless electricity firsthand as fluorescent tubes light up in your hands!
One of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans, the Temple of Saint Sava can be seen from all over the city thanks to its enormous white dome. Its interior is still not entirely complete, but its architecture is breathtaking.
Belgrade's nights never stop! Head to traditional Serbian taverns on Skadarlija, a bohemian street, to sample Serbian dishes accompanied by live music. In summer, you can dance until dawn at floating nightclubs on the river (splavovi).
