Serbia travel guide: everything about Belgrade’s Kalemegdan, the Tesla Museum, Skadarlija nightlife, and Serbian food.
Where the Sava and Danube rivers meet, Serbia is one of the Balkans' most forward-looking destinations, with its vast parks, modern city life, and energy that lasts until dawn. Here's your list of things to do on a tour of Serbia, especially its capital, Belgrade:
Belgrade's highest and greenest point, Kalemegdan (Belgrade Fortress), is a vast open-air museum. Head to the far end of the park, where the Victor Monument stands, and take in the magnificent landscape where the Sava and Danube rivers converge.
This museum showcases the inventions, personal belongings, and ashes of Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-born inventor who helped illuminate the modern world. What's more, on interactive tours you can experience fluorescent tubes in your hands lighting up with electricity from the air!
Walk along this famous pedestrian street, lined with historic buildings and luxury shops, listen to street musicians, and relax in its cafés.
On historic, cobbled Skadarlija Street, considered Belgrade's "Montmartre," visit traditional Serbian taverns known as "kafanas," decorated with flowers. Enjoy the famous Serbian grilled meat patty, pljeskavica, and the local drink rakija to the sound of live Serbian music.
Just across the river from central Belgrade, the Zemun district on the other side of the Danube feels like a completely different town, with its Austro-Hungarian architecture. Enjoy fish by the river, then climb Gardos Tower to photograph the whole city from above.
